Healthy Choices Improve Quality of Life!
January 29, 2008
Helping my son get and stay healthy isn’t always easy. It’s hard for him to resist unhealthy snacks, sodas and fast food that surrounds him. It’s also tough to get him away from the television, video games, and his computer to play and exercise.
But I can not stand by and ignore what could happen to his health if he eats badly and does not exercise. Everyday I encourage him to eat healthier and smarter by having him choose fruit over candy and provide him lots of veggies when ever possible.
I recently introduced a new exercise routine that includes having my son walk on the treadmill for twenty minutes a day and the only way I was able to pull that off was plug in the television and turn on the cartoons. But as you know kids tire and get board easily so I found a great DVD workout video called FitBALL Kids The DVD includes three mini workouts and is designed for kids between the ages of 7-14. It has helped my son improve his coordination, flexibility, and general fitness. I found the DVD at Allegro Medical. They have a variety of DVD exercise videos to choose from.
I want to be sure to support my child and provide him with strategies that will help him today but also shape him into a healthy, happy adult; improving his overall quality of life.
Prepare for the inevitable, Adolescence!
January 29, 2008
I am an avid reader and believe that if you don’t know something read about it, don’t remain ignorant. I have an 11 year old son who is fast approaching his teens and am at loss on how to prepare for the inevitable. Right now I am reading a book on parenting adolescence. This book not only provides techniques on how to deal with the up’s and downs of raising teenagers it also provides insight into the challenges both teens and parents face every day.
The book talks about how Parents spend the majority of the time managing the lives of there children from what they eat, to where they go and what time, what they wear, who they socialize with and more. It all changes when they reach adolescence. They now have the majority of the choices to make. Suddenly they are embarrassed to even be seen with there parents and the people that once had all the answers are now looked upon as nosy & intrusive. One of the techniques discussed was moving away from a manager role into more of a consulting role, knowing when to step in and give advice and when to cheer on the sidelines, understanding that the physical & emotional state of there children are in a constant state of change and how to help them during this time.
While my son is not yet a teen I want to be sure I am prepared to help him through this awkward and challenging stage of his life. I am hoping to put myself in his shoes and understand that while his challenges may not be as significant as paying the bills to keep a roof over his head they just as important to him as those things are to me.
Thyroid Disorders:
January 25, 2008
I recently found out that a friend of mine was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. I had never heard of such a thing and quickly began looking for as much information as possible. I found out that the Thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck just below your Adam’s apple. It helps control the function of your body’s metabolism as well as the function of many important organs, including your heart, brain, liver, kidneys, and skin. As you can imagine, it is very important to your overall well being to ensure your Thyroid is working properly.
Hypothyroidism is associated with the following symptoms; poor muscle tone, Fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation, weight gain, muscle cramps and joint pain, brittle fingernails, thinning hair, paleness. These were some of the same systems that my friend experienced. Her doctor completed diagnostic testing by measuring the amount of Thyroid-stimulating hormone being produced. The test enabled the doctor to determine that her Thyroid hormones were out of balance.
Effective treatments to help you manage Thyroid disorder include Thyroid removal and Thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Working with your primary care physician will help you determine which treatment is best for you. The key thing to remember is if your Thyroid gland is not functioning properly neither will you.
AED – A Life Saving Solution!
January 24, 2008
Automated External Defibrillators otherwise known as AED’s are progressively more common in airports, offices, and homes. They are instrumental in revival of heart attack patients. This innovative product is easy to use and there are a variety of units to choose, ranging in price from $1275.00 to as much as $3452.00.
Most AED units feature a patient analysis system that evaluates ECG which will enable the end user to determine if a shock is appropriate, text and audible messaging to guide users through protocol, and automatic self – tests the check readiness for use.
The AED is invaluable to people with heart problems that are being cared for by family members. Imagine your grandmother feeling fine one moment and the next is suffering from cardiac arrest. In a matter of minutes you can take immediate action to stabilize her heart until the paramedics arrive to take over. The AED is a convenient life saving solution empowering everyday people to save the lives of those they care the most about.
